Our history
1983
Origins
Establishment of PosTel Investment Management responsible for managing the Post Office and BT Pension Funds.
1995
The trustees of the BT Pension Scheme purchased the Post Office scheme’s holding in PosTel, thereby becoming the sole shareholder. The name was changed to Hermes, the Greek messenger of the gods.
2006
Leading the way on sustainable investment
BTPS was a founding signatory of the UN Principles of Responsible Investment.
2007
Separation from Hermes
Establishment of BTPSM and gradual separation from Hermes. BTPSM as the sole fiduciary manager for BTPS, and Hermes to become a third-party investment management firm.
2014
Record breaking longevity swap
BTPSM designed and executed largest longevity swap globally.
2015
Private equity investment programme with Hermes GPE – top quartile long-term performance and thematic approach.
2018
Insourced member administration, establishing BTPSA. Insourced management of £10bn gilts and LDI portfolio.
2019
Procentia acquisition
Acquired pensions software company: Procentia.
2021
Innovative trapped surplus solution
BTPSM designed and executed innovative funding vehicle to address concerns around ‘trapped surplus’.
2022
BTPSM obtained status as a MiFID firm, enabling provision of services to third parties.
2023
BTPSM announces its new trading name: Brightwell – opening its capabilities to other DB schemes
